Rocky Mountain Axolotls was founded in in 2021 by me, myself and I!. My name is Heather and I am the owner, operator and axolotl caretaker of RMA. I am a hobby breeder and do this from home, I do not have a storefront and my home is not open to the public. I sell my high quality, healthy axolotls on this website and occasionally at local reptile shows. We are located in Colorado Springs, CO not far from Ft Carson.
A bit about the breeder
I have had a deep love for nature and animals since I was a child. I trained horses during my teen years and even competed in a Junior Rodeo Association. I ended up winning World Champion Runner up my final year. I sadly had to move on from the horses to build a life for my family. Throughout my adult life I have had a multitude of animals from cats, dogs, turtles, bearded dragons, birds, snakes, frogs/toads and some rodents.. I spent a few years fostering dogs and volunteering for a local dog rescue. When I foster failed and ended up with 4 dogs I had to change my direction once again.
I got into aquatics and was keeping a large variety of fish both saltwater and freshwater. I was on Instagram one day looking at aquascapes for inspiration and saw someone who had an account for their axolotls. It was all over from there, I began researching which turned into months. I set up and cycled a tank and began my search for a breeder. I got my first 2 and yes, I had an accidental clutch and it was a nightmare trying to raise them. I continued to learn more but swore off ever breeding them again. I became close with a couple of breeders that I bought more axolotls from and they taught me more than I could have ever imagined there was to know about these animals! In 2021 decided I wanted to start this journey and try breeding again now with a new wealth of knowledge.
Genetics are crucial when breeding animals and especially animals such as axolotls who are critically endangered in the wild and come from a very small gene pool. I practice ethical breeding standards based on my knowledge and experience. I am constantly learning and sharing what I learn with my customers. I work full time but I spend a lot of my personal time creating resources such as this website and info you can find on my social media platforms for RMA. I understand that these animals can be sensitive but keeping them should not be hard. Education is key, and preparing a healthy environment to house them in is the foundation of your axolotl journey.
When you buy an axolotl from me you support my hobby and help me to continue to produce these beautiful creatures.
I pride myself in the care I take of my animals which shows in the product, aka beautiful, healthy fluffy gilled axolotls!
Thanks a-lotl for your support!
