A little about us

Rocky Mountain Axolotls LLC was founded in 2021, we have been in the aquarist hobby since 2016.

We are a small home based business located in Southern Colorado Springs and are not open to the public.

We do offer limited local pickup options on weekends only.

All sales are conducted through our online shop.  We also do vend at local reptile shows in Colorado from time to time.

We are currently restructuring the business and becoming more of a "boutique" breeder.  We will not be selling eggs or wholesale.  We will be keeping only a very small number of eggs from pairings and will not be breeding as frequently as in the past.  There may be periods of time that we do not have axolotls available.

We do not sell setups or accessories other than what is in the online shop.

We do still plan to move forward offering newts as well and creating more resources for their care.

Our goal is to focus on high quality over quantity while still being able to focus on full time jobs and what is most important, family & health ❤️

what is an axolotl?

  • Scientific name: Ambystoma Mexicanum
  • Type: Amphibian
  • Average life span: 10-15 years
  • Size: up to 12”
  • Origin: Lake Xochimilco, Mexico City
  • Critically endangered in the wild due to pollution & invasive species introduced into the canals that now make up Lake Xochimilco.
  • Remain in their juvenile, or neotenic, state their entire lives and are fully aquatic.
  • An important part of Aztec mythology, the Aztec god Xolotl who was said to have shape shifted into an axolotl to hide from having to sacrifice his twin brother.
  • They have been used in research for over 200 years for their ability to regenerate limbs and resist cancer.
  • They use their gills to breathe underwater.
  • They have delicate skin with a very thin slim coat on the top to protect it.  They are a “look and dont touch” pet, like fish are not ment to be held and taken out of the water.
